Root Canal Treatment
Endodontics | TREATING TEETH THAT HAVE HAD DENTAL ABSCESSES At the abbey
Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics) is the process of removing an infection from a tooth and sealing it so it is once again comfortable and usable. Infection in a tooth is commonly known as a dental abscess.
What is Root Canal Treatment?
A tooth is made up of the crown, the visible part of the tooth in the mouth abd the root which extends into the bone of the jaw, anchoring the tooth in position. The root canal system contains the dental pulp and extends from the crown of the tooth to the end of the root. Root canal treatment is needed when dental X-rays show that the pulp has been damaged by a bacterial infection. To treat the infection in the root canal, the bacteria need to be removed. This means the procedure should be painless and no more unpleasant than having a filling. After the bacteria have been removed, the root canal is filled and the tooth sealed with a filling or crown.
Why choose an Endodontist to complete your treatment?
Root Canal Treatment can be expensive and there is a small chance of it not working. When the fall out could be the loss of a tooth, its a good idea to hedge your bets and go with a dentist who is an expert in Root Canal Treatment. RCT can be tricky and requires precision and accuracy in order to ensure all bacteria is removed from the root and the root is filled to an optimal level. Through the use of a special microscope, Endodontists are able to see the tooth structure in far more detail than a general dentist can. This allows them to carefully remove the infection from a tooth. Following the cleaning and disinfection of a tooth it is carefully sealed to prevent the infection returning, restoring your tooth to a comfortable and usable state once again.
The benefits of seeing an Endodontist vs a General Dentist
- Able to treat teeth with complex anatomy
- Able to re-treat previously root filled teeth
- Use of a microscope to facilitate optimum treatment
- Access to advanced imaging equipment to plan treatment appropriately in advance

Frequently Asked Questions
Although there can be some discomfort between visits, which is manageable with over the counter painkillers, the treatment itself is completely pain free due to the use of local anaesthetic.
We do provide a range of restorative options at The Abbey. Your endodontist will refer you to one of our other clinicians should you wish us to restore the tooth afterwards.
In the past, a root filled tooth would often darken after treatment. However, with modern techniques this does not usually happen. If there is any discolouration, there are several treatments available to restore the natural appearance. Root canal treatment is usually highly successful. However, if the infection comes back the treatment can sometimes be repeated.
