Dental Filling
A dental filling is the first line of defence for a tooth once decay has set in. The purpose of a filling is to restore a tooth’s normal function and shape while preventing further decay.
What is a dental filling?
A filling is used to treat a small hole, or cavity, in a tooth. Your dentist will remove the decayed tooth tissue and then fills the space with a filling material which sets in place.
What are dental fillings made from?
There are several types of filling materials, including:
- Amalgam: Silver-coloured and durable.
- Composite resin: Tooth-coloured and aesthetically pleasing.
- Gold: Long-lasting but more expensive.
- Porcelain: tooth coloured and resistant to staining.
What concerns can dental fillings help with?
Failure to treat tooth decay in an otherwise healthy tooth is likely to lead to the loss of that tooth at a much earlier time in life. Filling a tooth is often the most appropriate treatment for tooth decay and in some cases can last up to 20 years before it needs replacing.
