What are the potential causes of Gum Disease?
Gum disease (Periodontal Disease) is most commonly caused by poor diet and a lack of oral hygiene such as lack of brushing and flossing.
Failure to clean your teeth and gums regularly allows plaque to build up and harden around the gum margins if this is left long term it will eventually lead to the gums becoming infected.
Why is it worth treating?
If gum disease is not treated properly it can lead to the gum structure around the tooth receding/breaking down, this will result in loose teeth or even the teeth falling out. Long-term low-level infection of your gum tissue can also have serious consequences for your wider body with recent medical studies linking gum disease with serious life shortening conditions such as Heart Disease, Diabetes & Dementia.
How can we help?
We would recommend booking a dental check up with a dentist. In this appointment the dentist will complete a full assessment of your teeth, gums and mouth. They may take some routine x-rays. Once completed they will provide a diagnosis and offer you a range of options for potential treatments which you can take away with you to think about. In rare cases your dentist may need to refer you to a specialist (also known as a Periodontist) for a more in-depth diagnosis and treatment plan.
If you would like to prevent gum disease developing; alongside your routine dental checkup we would recommend seeing a dental hygienist for a routine clean at least twice a year. They will give you a deep clean to complement what you are doing at home. They will also advice and support you on the best methods of keeping your teeth and gums clean between visits
