What is a broken tooth?
A broken tooth can mean many different things so let’s break it down (no pun intended).

A Chipped Tooth
This is a minor crack on the surface of the tooth, it may cause some sensitivity or discomfort but can usually be repaired by polishing down any sharp edges.

A Broken Tooth
This occurs when a piece of the tooth has broken off completely. If you experience a broken tooth, it’s essential to take care of the broken fragment. Treatment may involve gluing your original tooth back together, replacing with a filling or crown. Root Canal treatment may be required in some cases.

A Cracked Tooth
This is a minor crack on the surface of the tooth, it may cause some sensitivity or discomfort but can usually be repaired by polishing down any sharp edges.
What causes a broken tooth?
Its less common for a healthy tooth to chip, crack or break. It’s much more common for your tooth to be damaged if it already has signs of decay, is filled or has a crown or veneer attached.
In most cases, damage is caused by biting down too hard on a piece of food. Excessive teeth grinding or physical injury are also a common cause
Why is it worth treating?
If a chipped, cracked or broken tooth is not treated over time the issue can get worst causing sensitivity and in situations where the tooth is cracked or broken the nerve can become exposed. This can cause severe pain/discomfort and potentially infection can set in. Failure to act quickly could lead to losing the tooth more quickly.
How can we help?
Book an appointment with a dentists as soon as possible. If you are in any pain or discomfort emergency appointments on the day are usually available. In the meantime, avoid chewing foods on the affected side of the mouth to prevent the tooth breaking further.
