Teeth Grinding
Teeth grinding is when a person rubs or clenches their teeth together often without even realising it is happening. It is often during the night while sleeping.
This can cause pain to the teeth, face and jaw and can eventually lead to the teeth wearing down causing more treatment to be needed.
Why might we grind or clench our teeth?
The most common cause of grinding or clenching is stress and anxiety, however other factors can cause this such as genetics, other health issues, too much caffeine, alcohol intake or certain medications.
Why is it worth treating?
Ignoring teeth grinding or clenching can lead to long term jaw problems, wearing down the teeth can result in the weaking of teeth leading to breakages and potentially the loss of teeth.
How can we help?
Book in to see a dentist to discuss the issue. The dentist can assess your current oral health and explain the immediate and future impact of leaving your teeth grinding or clenching untreated. Treatment will include the consideration of how possible causes can be minimised. Your dentist may also recommend wearing a mouthguard which reduces your ability to grind and clench. It is usually recommended that mouth guards are worn over night.
