Sleep Apnoea & Snoring
Sleep Apnoea is a potentially serious sleep disorder where breathing frequently stops and starts during sleep. Snoring can be a symptom of Sleep Apneoa and left untreated can have serious consequences for your wider physical and mental health.
What are the potential causes of Sleep Apnoea
Essentially there are two types of sleep apnoea. The first is when your throat muscles relax causing a blockage in your airway. This is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) occurs when your brain does not send the right signals to the muscles that control your breathing. The risk of developing Sleep Apneoa can be increased if you are overweight, have a narrow airway or enlarged tonsils.
Why is it worth treating?
Sleep Apneoa left untreated can cause significant harm to your physical and mental wellbeing. The power of sleep should not be underestimated when it comes to overall health. Those with untreated Sleep Apneoa leave themselves more vulnerable to conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, dementia and strokes. It can also increase your potential for developing chronic mental health concerns such as low mood and more serious depression.
