What is Tooth Wear?
Tooth wear is the gradual loss of tooth structure due to factors other than tooth decay. It can affect the enamel (outer layer) and dentin (inner layer) of your teeth, leading to sensitivity, changes in appearance, and even tooth damage if left untreated.
Types of Tooth Wear
There are three main types of tooth wear:
- Attrition – Caused by tooth-to-tooth contact, such as grinding (bruxism) or clenching.
- Erosion – Due to acid softening and dissolving enamel, often from acidic foods/drinks or stomach acid (e.g., acid reflux or vomiting).
- Abrasion – Physical wear from external factors like aggressive brushing, hard toothbrushes, or biting on hard objects (e.g., pens, nails).
Signs and Symptoms
- Flattened or shorter teeth
- Yellowish discoloration (thinning enamel exposes dentin)
- Sensitive teeth (especially to hot, cold, or sweet foods)
- Rounded or notched edges near the gumline
- Cracks or chips in teeth
Prevention & Management
- Reduce Acid Exposure
- Limit acidic foods/drinks (citrus fruits, soda, wine, sports drinks).
- Rinse with water after consuming acidic substances (wait 30 mins before brushing).
- Chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva, which neutralizes acid.
- Protect Teeth from Grinding (Bruxism)
- Wear a custom night guard if you grind your teeth at night.
- Practice stress-reduction techniques (meditation, exercise).
- Improve Brushing Habits
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, circular motions.
- Avoid brushing immediately after eating acidic foods.
- Choose a low-abrasion toothpaste (ask your dentist for recommendations).
- Treat Underlying Conditions
- Manage acid reflux (GERD) or frequent vomiting with medical help.
- Address dry mouth (xerostomia) with saliva substitutes if needed.
- Restorative Dental Treatments
- Bonding or fillings to repair worn areas.
- Crowns or veneers for severely worn teeth.
- Fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel.
